Mary E. Demps was a visionary educator and community leader whose life’s work was dedicated to dismantling barriers to educational success. Born with an unwavering belief in the transformative power of knowledge, she spent over four decades championing the needs of students who faced systemic obstacles. Her philosophy was simple yet profound: "One Child, One Teacher, One Book, One Pen... Can Change the World."
Throughout her distinguished career, Mary served not just as an instructor, but as a mentor, advocate, and beacon of hope. She recognized early on that academic potential is often limited by practical needs—a lack of textbooks, the absence of modern technology, or the inability to afford basic school supplies. She worked tirelessly to bridge these gaps, organizing community drives and establishing support networks that ensured no student was left behind due to financial hardship.
Her impact extended far beyond the classroom. Mary was a cornerstone of special education advocacy, pushing for inclusive environments where every learner, regardless of their starting point, could thrive. She believed that empowerment begins with the right tools, and her legacy lives on through the scholarship fund that bears her name, continuing her mission to provide college essentials to the next generation of scholars.
Today, the Mary E. Demps Scholarship Fund stands as a testament to her enduring spirit. We carry forward her commitment to empowering dreams, ensuring that her light continues to guide students toward a brighter, more equitable future through the gift of education.

Mary E. Demps was born in Quitman, Georgia, the youngest girl in a family of six children. From an early age, she had a deep love for learning and a strong belief that education could open doors for anyone willing to work for it.
In the late 1960s, Mary moved to New York City to pursue post‑secondary education and follow her dreams. She earned both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Reading and Education, with a minor in Spanish, from The City College of New York. Fluent in Spanish, she used her language skills to connect with students and families from many different backgrounds.
For more than 30 years, Ms. Demps taught students with special needs of all ages in the New York City and Miami‑Dade County school systems. She was known for her patience, kindness, and high expectations. She often used her own funds to buy books, supplies, and other tools so her students had what they needed to learn and succeed. To her, teaching was not just a job—it was a calling.
Mary’s passion for education extended beyond her classroom. She encouraged and supported several family members to attend and graduate from Fisk University and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the United States. She believed deeply in the role HBCUs play in shaping leaders, building confidence, and preserving a rich legacy of Black excellence.
In November 2020, the Mary E. Demps Educational Scholarship Fund was created in her honor. In 2021, it became a 501(c)(3) non‑profit organization. The fund is designed to assist college students with the cost of books, electronics, and educational supplies as they pursue their degrees.
Through this scholarship, we are proud to continue Mary’s life’s work—supporting students, opening doors, and touching lives, just as she did throughout her entire adult life.
